Sleepwear for sensitive skin: 8 Things to Check Before Buying Pajamas

If your skin is easily irritated, choosing pajamas is about more than finding something soft. The fabric matters. But so do the seams, neckline, waistband, fit, heat and what happens after several hours of wear.

At Sleebbee, we've spent years developing sleepwear around a simple question: what does this actually feel like against a woman's skin when she's wearing it for 8 hours a night?

Here are 8 things worth checking before buying pajamas for sensitive skin.

1. Check the actual fabric composition

Don't stop at “soft” or “bamboo pajamas.” Check the product care label. Sleepwear can be made from cotton, bamboo-derived fibres, modal, polyester, nylon, rayon and various blends. Even fabrics marketed in similar ways can feel very different.

Sleebbee sleepwear is made from 95% bamboo lyocell and 5% spandex. We chose the combination for its soft feel, breathability and 4-way stretch, while keeping enough structure for everyday wear.

If you're looking at bamboo sleepwear, check exactly which bamboo-derived fibre you're buying rather than assuming all bamboo fabrics are the same.

2. Look at the seams, not just the fabric

A pajama set can feel incredibly soft between your fingers and still become irritating after hours of wear. Look closely at the inside:

  • Are the seams bulky?

  • Is there rough stitching?

  • Are there unnecessary labels or details touching your skin?

  • Do several seams meet in areas that move frequently?

For sensitive skin, construction matters just as much as fibre.

This is something we've become increasingly conscious of as we've developed Sleebbee. A customer once told us that her eczema around the neck made certain collars uncomfortable. It made us look differently at a detail that is easy to overlook when designing sleepwear: how much fabric actually sits against your skin for hours at a time.

3. Don't overlook the neckline

Your neck is one of the first places to notice a scratchy label, stiff seam or irritating collar.

When choosing pajamas for sensitive skin, look for a smooth, low-friction neckline and check where labels and seams sit.

This is also why we pay attention to the small construction details in Sleebbee pieces. We're not just thinking about how a pajama looks in a photograph—we're thinking about what you'll feel when you're lying in bed at 2am.

Less rubbing. Less fuss. More comfort.

4. Check the waistband

A waistband can feel perfectly fine while you're standing and much less comfortable once you're sitting, lounging or sleeping.

Look for:

  • A flexible waistband

  • Enough room around the stomach

  • Minimal pressure

  • Fabric that moves with your body

This becomes especially important during pregnancy and postpartum, when your body is changing.

Sleebbee pajamas are designed with a no-pressure waistband and a roomy, flexible fit, so the same sleepwear can continue to work through different stages of your body.

Comfort shouldn't depend on standing perfectly still.

5. Think about your underarms and other friction points

Sensitive skin isn't only about the fabric touching your back or legs. Think about where clothing repeatedly moves against your body: Neck. Armpits. Waist. Inner thighs. Cuffs.

If you live somewhere hot and humid, the underarm area deserves particular attention. Heat, moisture and repeated movement can make an otherwise comfortable garment feel very different by morning.

When trying on sleepwear, move your arms, sit down and stretch.

Your pajamas should move with you, not constantly rub against you.

6. Consider heat and moisture

If you tend to sweat at night or sleep hot, think beyond how a fabric feels when you first put it on.

Look for sleepwear that feels lightweight, breathable and flexible, particularly if you live in a humid climate or experience night sweats. It's hard to tell from the first touch, hence choosing natural fabrics like tencel, bamboo and linen are safe choices.

This is one reason breathable bamboo sleepwear has become such an important part of Sleebbee. We design for real nights—not just the first five minutes after getting dressed.

7. Don't forget what happens after washing

Sometimes the issue isn't the pajamas itself. It's what you're putting on it in the laundry. If your skin is easily irritated, pay attention to detergent, fragrance and fabric softener. More product doesn't necessarily mean cleaner clothes, and heavy softener can change the feel of some fabrics over time.

For bamboo sleepwear, we recommend:

  • Cold gentle wash

  • Using a laundry bag

  • Avoid fabric softeners (they coat your fabrics in chemicals)

  • Avoiding high heat

  • Following the garment's care instructions

  • Washing new clothing before wearing it

You want your pajamas to stay soft because of the fabric itself, not because they're coated in layers of softener.

8. Look beyond the word “sensitive skin”

A pajama labelled “for sensitive skin” doesn't tell you very much on its own.

Before buying, check:

FABRIC — What is it actually made from?

SEAMS — What will touch your skin?

WAISTBAND — Does it press or move comfortably?

FIT — Can you sleep, stretch and lounge without restriction?

HEAT — What happens if you sweat?

CARE — Can you wash it without complicated maintenance?

CERTIFICATION — Does the fabric carry recognised textile certifications?

These details tell you much more than a marketing claim.

What we care for when designing sleepwear for sensitive skin

Sleebbee started from my own experience of pregnancy, but five years of developing sleepwear and listening to women wear our pieces has changed how I think about comfort. Soft fabric is only the starting point.

We've had women tell us about eczema around their neck, irritation from clothing, wanting less pressure around their stomach, struggling with heat and sweat, and simply wanting something comfortable during pregnancy, postpartum and everyday life.

Those conversations influence the little decisions we make—from the fabric and stretch to the waistband, fit and areas where fabric sits against the skin.

Our sleepwear is made from 95% bamboo lyocell + 5% spandex, with 4-way stretch, a roomy fit and a no-pressure waistband. Our button-down styles are intentional, with nursing in mind.

Because sensitive skin doesn't need another piece of clothing to think about.

It needs sleepwear that gets out of the way.

Soft, breathable materials such as cotton can help reduce irritation, allow better airflow, and keep little ones comfortable throughout the night. Before buying pajamas, check the fabric composition, stitching, labels, fit, and washing instructions to ensure they are gentle enough for everyday wear.
